How to paint a window frame

window with white trim

Painting my window frame white was an easy way to brighten my interior. I recently changed out my baseboards and door trim for white, and wanted my windows to match. At $1,500 – 2,000 PER window, I wasn’t ready to replace the window quite yet. I decided a couple gallons of paint was a much easier fix! Even better, I was able to complete this update in less than one day!

Preparation:

  • Remove any window dressing, and the screen.
  • Remove any hardware
  • Wipe down with a 1:1 water and vinegar solution (or Krud Kutter if you prefer).
  • If your window trim has been previously painted, it would be a good idea to try and strip as much of the paint as possible (but you can always paint over them also). The issue with applying too much paint is that it can cause issues with the seals, as well as getting the screen back in place. This is a good paint stripper, BE CERTAIN TO FOLLOW ALL MANFACTURER INSTRUCTION AND SAFETY WARNINGS.
  • Once dry, sand the wood lightly with 220-grit sand paper.

Paint:

  • Paint with an all-purpose primer like Kilz, I use 2 coats, allowing the paint to dry between coats. TIP: Leave your brush in a plastic bag to keep it from drying out between coats!
  • Paint with a semi-gloss finish paint (you can buy specific trim paint if you request it from the store you purchase your paint from). I used 3 coats, allowing the paint to dry between coats.
  • Re-install the hardware, screen, and window dressings.

Great tips on painting a window frame. I’ve never used Kurd Kutter, but heard good things. I’ll pick some up for my next DIY project. Thanks for suggesting!
