How to hang floating mirrors

Updating my master bedroom, I wanted to add a gallery of three large mirrors. When I first added them, they were installed with these little clips that were visible on the edge of the mirror, and I just didn’t like the way it looked:

So, on to Plan B. I found hardware that allowed you to hang artwork using the french cleat method. You attach on side to the back of the artwork, and one side to the wall, and it’s pretty easy to hang things. Problem was, I couldn’t drill the hardware into the mirror. Enter: Super Glue!

I wanted the final look of the mirrors to appear as if “floating” with a gap between the mirror and the wall. While I was at my local woodshop getting lumber for the shelving I put up in this room, I found some hardware for hanging artwork using the french cleat method. I used Super Glue to glue one side of the french cleat to the back of the mirror, making sure I measured carefully so the mirror would be level once mounted on the wall. I attached the other side of the french cleat to a spare piece of 1 x 2 I had.

The hardware comes with it’s own tiny level, so mounting the spare piece of wood on the wall was really easy. I used a second piece of spare 1 x 2 and mounted it to the wall on the lower area of where the mirror would get mounted so the mirror would sit flat.

Back of the mirror

Once the lumber was up on the wall, it was as simple as hanging the mirror up! After a few days however, I noticed that when we would walk by, the mirrors would rattle against the wood a little bit. I didn’t like the way this sounded, so I purchased some rubber bumpers, and added them to the bottom board as a sound buffer. This took care of the noise!
